Since most of my students keep their art books here in the Art Room, I want to share with parents what we are learning in Art Groups. One of my goals is to be better at keeping you updated here on my website.

This week we are learning about one of my very favorite artists of all time: The Architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

"(born June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures, 532 of which were completed. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture".[1] His creative period spanned more than 70 years."

Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time".

These are the pages we added to their notebooks about Frank Lloyd Wright (we learned about the element of space last week):

Our project this week is using graph paper to design and draw a dream house. They learned some architectural symbols to represent things like doorways, toilets, sinks, showers, counters, etc. This is definitely a little different type lesson and project than what we normally do, but I have been excited about how engaged the kids have been in this project. So far, they have been super interested in Frank Lloyd Wright's work and have been completely enthralled in designing their houses with their own unique style!

Nothing makes me happier than to see them absorbing information and discovering that this might be a type of art they might have some interest in!!

Fun Fact: We have a Frank Lloyd Wright home HERE in Utah!

Built in 1958 -

DONALD STROMQUIST HOUSE

1289 Canyon Creek Drive, Bountiful, Utah

If you enjoy learning about people's lives like I do, I would encourage you to read about Frank Lloyd Wright. I find him fascinating, I love that he had a very specific style, I love that he knew who he was and was always true to himself. His life was also full of drama, a traumatic mass murder of his loved ones in his Taliesin home while he was away for work in 1914, a very interesting life but full of creativity for 70+ years!
